hi there it seems im the only one who with generalized anxiety has constant debilitating muscle tension i hold my breathe without even knowing it and hold my body in un natural positions so now my neck and shoulders are so locked i dont go any where besides work and i just try to get through the day i go to chiro , massage physical therapy and it only works for a day and goes back its ruining my life i dont understand i uswed to be normal and now my heart races because i feel so locked up and cant breathe drs say i have gad but im afraid of medication too the y gave me citalpram but its been in my drawwr since june 2011 im afraid i dont even take medicine for colds or flu i think everything will make me die am i the only one like this??? i have a stressful job i cant exercise either if i do my muscles get more tight and it throws me intp a panic attack because my jeart rate goes up and it freaks me out cause my body is already on alert so exercise it thinks its in fight or flight mode ugggghhhh

thanks everyone its nice to know im not alone !!! it seems no one understands and says just relax ok easier said than done!!! i could relax if my muscles werent so tight 24/7 it cause havoc on my body and mind or they say take a hot bath ya that works for the normal people who dont have a more extreme case of anxiety and i always go back and forth on if i have anxiety beause im fine when my muscles afre for some reason relaxed more on a certain day but than one thing will make them go so tight again so i dont get it ....or if i know i have to be some where or if family is coming over for dinner my muscles do the same thing and it takes days for me to unwind ...

I have GAD as well and I totally can relate to you with the muscle tension. Exercise really helps me loosen up, so I would encourage you to try exercising for short amounts of time and once you realize that your heart rate going up will not make you have a heart attack or die, then you might be able to get more benefit from exercise. I totally understand that it is hard and frustrating though. I will realize my shoulders are hunched and tense, so I will relax them and about two minutes later I will realize they are back in the same position *sigh*. Keep fighting the good fight, hang in there.

Hi very intresing blog. Sound to me like you are just overwhelmed. I like that word. LOL Anyway you are not the only one. Trust me. Its amazing how powerful the mind is. It can make you react as if there is a tiger chasing you even tho you might just be on your couch.

Excactly when and where does this start? I doubt it's just random.

Ive found myself holding my breath unintentuonally many times. I alsi fear having allergic reactions to meds/foods. Once I stopped eating cinnamon b/c I had a scratchy throat after eating some cereal so I was sure I was allergic and if continied to eat it I would eventually go into anaphylactic shock...Our minds I tell ya...You are not alone sweetie!

thanks i just dont understand how anxiety can cause so much muscle issues though so i always think im dyeing or have another health problem i have been to dr a zillion times but nothing other than now i have a bulging disc in my neck went to spine specialist and he said to learn relaxing skills but its hard to relax when your muscles afre so tense and it makes your heart race it sucks bad i feel for people who deal with this

sounds to me like yr mind is racey anxiety can do that. I suffer from GAD i get anxiety with almsot everything even cooking. I'm on 40 mg citalopram it has helped in lesseing the anxiety. I still get bad anxiety but I'm not having several panic attacks throughout the day. u won't die from taking meds it took me 3 yrs before I would take them but anxiety got so bad i was no longer coping alone. I still struggle but its a work in progress. Hope this helps!
